Eye Dandy is a small design studio founded by designer and photographer Neal Herbert. Based in the desert hamlet of Moab, Utah, Eye Dandy specializes in clean, efficient designs for both print and the web.
Neal started his life behind the lens sometime in the 1970s when he stopped wetting the bed and his parents rewarded him with a Kodak Brownie Starmite II. Much of his early work captured the trials and tribulations of the family pets. While studying at McGill University in the 1980s, a stint as photo editor for the McGill Tribune sharpened his interest in photography (and broadened his range of subjects), leading to a freelance career in Montreal, Seattle and eventually Moab.
Since 1994, Neal has worked as a photographer and designer for the National Park Service (NPS). His work can be seen in a variety of NPS publications, including those of Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park, Hovenweep National Monument and Natural Bridges National Monument. Neal's career as a designer had an equally unlikely beginning. Encouraged by a friend to enter the growing field of desktop publishing in 1987, Neal attended a workshop in Aldus PageMaker and began assisting with the production of the McGill Tribune. It was still largely a paper and scissors operation (waxer, line-tape, etc.), but the digital revolution was underway...with the MacIntosh Plus and Apple LaserWriter as its shining stars. In 1995, one of Neal's coworkers at the NPS suggested that Canyonlands needed a website. As the resident designer, Neal was asked to create the site and found himself (despite asking "what do we need a website for?") attending another workshop, this time learning HTML and producing his first website. Over the next decade, demand for custom websites and content management systems grew steadily and led to the formation of Eye Dandy in 2006. For a glimpse of that work as well as more recent projects, visit the portfolios. |
